The Chair:

Typically found in the living room, it is commonly used to perch oneself in a social setting or perhaps to enjoy reading in, knitting in or napping in. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, fabrics and materials, as well as patterns and colours. The chair, in any space serves as a functional piece, however, in the living room it can also make a design statement.

Despite it being two weeks into the year of 2012, we would still like to wish everyone a HAPPY NEW YEAR!

In starting this new year, we thought it would be appropriate to introduce ourselves so that many of our blog readers can get to know us a little better. It wasn't until this last year that Jenny Martin Design has blossomed into a group of very talented young designers.

Jenny Martin - as the principal designer, she has allowed her company, Jenny Martin Design, to become an established name in the local community. What better than to guide you to an interview she did with Ivan Meade from Meade Design Group Inc. Click here to read up on Jenny!

Sarah Ellwood - If you have called our office in this last year and spoken with Sarah, you will instantly know how lovely she is! Graduating from Pacific Design Academy, she tested the waters in kitchen design and then soon became part of JMD. Her immaculate attention to detail ensures that quality is always at its height. Currently, Sarah is on maternity leave, enjoying her time being a mother with her husband CK, and new baby boy Leo.

Jessica Bell - This is one designer whose creativity could knock your socks off you! Jess brings creativity to a whole new level. It is always a pleasure to see what things Jess comes up with, and in a blink of an eye, she creates amazing concepts and sketches! With an Advanced Diploma in Interior Design from Sheridan College (Ontario), Jess has returned to her hometown here in Victoria to pursue her career as an interior designer. She enjoys the new challenges that each day brings at Jenny Martin Design.

Annie Woolsey - There is never a dull moment with the presence of Annie. Not only does she bring her impressive intelligence, skills, and concepts to JMD, but she also has an amazing trait to keep people smiling. Here at Jenny Martin Design, we are thrilled to have her on our team, after having recently graduated from Vancouver Island University with a Bachelor of Interior Design Degree.

Mari O'Meara - Following her Bachelor of Arts Degree from UVic (majoring in Geography), Mari returned to educate herself at Vancouver Island University to attain a Bachelor of Interior Design Degree. Despite having a baby, she was eager to get back to work at JMD and after 10 weeks, she was back at designing again. When asked what she enjoys most about interior design, she says she enjoys it all so much that she finds it hard to stop working sometimes.

Carly Ringstead - To complete our delightful group of designers, we welcome Carly, the newest member of JMD. After living in England for 5 years, Carly returned to Victoria to attain a Business Diploma from Camosun College followed by an Interior Design Diploma from Pacific Design Academy. With this new career path at JMD, Carly is able to apply her well rounded skills and creativity; particularly with the ability to throw together amazing schemes.

It is naturally Anti-microbial, dust mite resistant, Anti-fungal and fire resistant. Latex is also self ventilating and temperature regulating. Any laminating (gluing) is done with Simalfa brand waterborne adhesive. It is recognized as the most safe and benevolent product on the market.

Several weeks ago, we had the opportunity to work with a local photographer by the name of Antonio La Fauci. Now that we have something to showcase, we are dying to share with you another local company that we can recommend!

Antonio La Fauci. Born and raised on Vancouver Island, from the time he was 12 years old, he has been hooked on photography. With his experience over the years, as well as working under Lionel Deluy, Antonio is what we would consider as one of the best "lifestyle portraiture" in town.

What a pleasure to work with Antonio. His kind demeanor immediately relieves any nerves before the shoot, making it very comfortable to be "yourself", even with a camera and lights flashing in front of you. Once the camera starts shooting, you can see his passion as a photographer shine through. For some photographers it may just be a matter of getting as many shots done and moving on to the next, but in Antonio's case, each shot is carefully calculated to be as perfect as possible. From lighting, to angles, to the minute details...what a difference this makes!

Within several hours of our day of photoshoot, we nailed an entire weekend worth of shots, all of which we had so much fun doing and making the day go by way too fast!

Windows

The cold season has arrived. A little too early with the snow and window shield scraping. We find ourselves hearing that good old clicking of the heaters and the crackling of our fireplaces. The unfortunate part about this, is that a lot of that energy may in fact be escaping through the inefficient windows many of us have in our older homes.

If you are considering to replace these windows to something more efficient and long lasting, you may have more than a couple choices. Windows are one of the most important parts of our home, not only for the purpose of allowing natural light into our homes, but also for ventilation and circulation, for exterior aesthetics, for interior aesthetics, for the ability to look outside to that amazing view, and even to prevent ourselves from becoming depressed.

When it comes to types of windows, there are several common types of openings.

1) Casement - The window splits in the middle and can open using rotary crank or a lever. These are one of the most common types of windows found in buildings, particularly houses and apartments. Typically, they will allow for 100 percent ventilation.

2) Hopper - Commonly mistaken with the Awning, this window requires particular hardware at the bottom hinge that allows the opening to be limited at the top. You will notice these types of windows in highrise buildings. Recently, the tilt-and-turn is making is way into many homes with the dual-action that enables versatility in ventilating.

3) Awning - Similar to the hopper style windows, the awning windows have a hinge at the top. This creates a canopy like feature that can shield against rain.

4) Jalousie - Many may find these types of windows in your home, whether you may have liked to or not. Commonly found in sundrooms and porches, they are small slots of awning-like top hinged openings that open at the same time. The lever allows these slots to be set at any position. Although they can have a great "cooling" affect, they can be very obstructive to the view.

6) Sliding - Sliding windows are also a very common type of window found in many homes. They allow half to be completely open, whether it be vertical (gliding) or horizontal.

7) Pivoting - This type of window pivots in the centre which can rotate 180 or 360 degrees around its axis.

Windows can be found as a single pane or multiple paned, also know to have muntins. Muntins are strips of wood or metal that separate or hold panes of glass in the window. They are also known as glazing bars, muntin bars, or sash bars. In the mid 19th century, small piece of glass which were cheaper to produce than a large single pane, where fabricated into a grid using muntins. We agree with Wikipedia in that they were more "architecturally attractive" than single paned windows. In the UK and some other countries, however, many of these muntins were removed from thousands of older buildings in favor of large panes of glass.

Muntins are often confused with mullions and astragals. Mullions are what completely separate the window units. Astragals close the gap between two leaves of a double door.

If one were to go look at their 19th Century style window with so called muntins, but notice that there is in fact only a single pane of glass, they are looking at a grille. Grills are a decorative structure of either wood or other material to give it the appearance of muntins. They may be cheaper than re-creating a window with real muntins, but some of them look great from afar!

And finally, another feature of a window is a transom. Transoms are found either above a window or a door. They are a transverse bar or beam in a frame separating the window above from what is found below.

It has been far too long since our last post and now that things are finally organized again, we can get back to our blogging!

First off, we have delightful news! We have been nominated as a finalists for the 2011 Georgie Awards in the Best Residential Renovation category! The project submitted is one you may recognize: Arioso. Click here for a quick reminder :)

The Georgie Awards is held by the Canadian Home Builder's Association of BC (CHBABC). They strive to celebrate high quality workmanship in home building and select projects at a provincial level, whereas the CARE Awards (also held by CHBABC) are selected from all of Vancouver Island. Don't miss out on some great before and after shots of all the finalist on their website.

We are so honoured to be considered amongst so many other amazing companies on this greater scale of talents that we find across British Columbia. Events like the Georgie Awards and the CARE Awards continue to encourage JMD to strive and surpass our work as designers.

Results will be announced on Feb. 25, 2012.

Breathe Living Wall by DIRTT

Recently, we had the pleasure of speaking to Gail Tyshynski from DIRTT Environmental Solutions Ltd. about some of the latest new products and added features. A particular item which we were especially excited about was the concept of the Breathe Living Wall.

Although the concept behind living walls have existed since the late 80's when Patrick Blanc created the first green wall at the Museum of Science and Industry of Paris, DIRTT presents a new concept that is by far the easiest and most straight forward we have come across.

Creating a green wall in an interior space is beneficial in many ways. Plants create a pleasant aesthetic quality to a space, they help filter the air, and they also provide means to reusing water.

DIRTT's Breathe can be effortlessly mounted to the tile layers of walls or retrofitted onto existing DIRTT walls. They can also be mounted to any flat surface including gypsum, stone, tile, etc, as long as lighting and other vital factors for the survival of plants are provided.

The plant pots provided by Breathe come in 3 sizes: 6 x 6", 3 x 6", and 3 x 3". Each pot has a connected trough where the water runs along and is wicked up to each individual pot. Depending on the requirements, the number of wicks (up to 4) determines how much water each plant can intake. The plants can be watered through a hose or with a watering can and for larger configerations that make this method difficult, a device called the Water Boy by DIRTT is used to fill the troughs.

We are excited to try this system out in an indoor space, perhaps even in our own space sometime! According to Gail, it is a fraction of the cost to other means of creating a green wall. The simplicity and versatility make Breathe an item we are certain to promote.

Although it seems like fall came sooner than we had hoped, now it has officially begun! With the changing colour of leaves, wetter weather, and that need for an extra layer of clothing or scarf, we are now required to heat our homes once again.

Whether you heat your home with a boiler, furnace, heated floors, or with solar power, a fireplace will always have that feeling of warmth simply by looking at one.

The fireplace has been the most common method of heating a home since the early days of civilization. Although we don't use an open flame method like the cave days, today we can find an array of different fireplaces that suit any space.

If you plan on renovating your dated fireplace, here are a few general tips, thanks to Warren Middleton of Heat Savers Fireplace & Patio Co.

There are 3 types of fireplaces: 1) freestanding 2) inserts 3) zero-clearance....there is a 4) outdoor, but we will focus on indoor for now.

There are 4 sources of fuel: 1) wood 2) gas 3) electric 4) alcohol. Today, the majority of us prefer gas, whether it be natural gas or propane over wood and electric. Let's face it, wood fireplaces require maintenance (cleaning) and labour (carrying logs), while electric fireplaces just don't look real.

If you are installing a gas fireplace, you must must must consider how you are going to get fuel to the fireplace as well as how to get the exhaust out of the house. Both require a pipe or vent, so during the planning stage of your renovation, it is always important to make sure they are going to work properly and efficiently with the space. We don't want a bulkhead if it doesn't need to be there.

Two common types of venting are with either a B-Vent (naturally drafted) or a Balanced Flue (Direct Vent). With a B-Vent, the air necessary for combustion is drawn in from within the home. The combustion byproduct then naturally rises up through a vent, en route to escape from the house.

With a Balanced Flue (Direct Vent), the fireplace is completely sealed from the room. The air necessary for combustion is drawn from outside of the building and expelled back outside through a separate compartment. Not only is the Direct Vent applicable to an existing traditional chimney, it also has minimal fuel consumption.

According to Warren from Heat Savers Fireplace & Patio Co., inspectors can make changes to framing around a fireplace but it is ideal to follow the manufacturers information indicated with each product.

Friday night was a day all of us at the JMD office were looking forward to for weeks! As we counted down the days, the day finally arrived and we were all very excited to dress up and represent Jenny Martin Design once and for all again at the 2011 Care Awards ceremony.

This year, the Awards was held again at The Empress Hotel in the ever so spectacular Ball Room. With a room filled with incredibly talented businesses, we were honoured to be amongst them all!

What a night! Jenny Martin Design was honoured with 5 out of the 7 categories nominated!

Barn Doors

Barn doors have come a long way. What once were used more commonly for the exterior doors of a shed, stable, barn or warehouse, barn doors have become an architectural and functional trend within an interior space.

In today's design, the barn door concept has evolved to include a wide range of styles and materials plus a variety of different hardware. Whether you aim to achieve a traditional farmhouse look or a super modern sleek look, you can achieve any style to suit your space.

The barn door, or shall we now refer to it as the sliding door allows an efficient use of space because it requires no swing. We see more sliding doors for small spaces particularly in new condominiums where functional space-saving is critical in the design.

The best thing about sliding doors is that they can be utilized in any space. We particularly enjoy them for small bathrooms, tight closets, and messy offices. They can also be used as a feature in a room or be cleverly disguised in the backdrop.

If you are planning on incorporating a sliding door in your space, make sure you have clearance above the door opening for your hardware. Also be aware that adequate space beside the opening is required to allow the door to be open fully. This doesn't mean that you can't put anything on that part of the wall! You can still place furniture a few inches off from the wall as well as hang artwork.

Using an accent colour can be challenging, especially when you don't know how to apply it to a room. As a rule of thumb, we recommend using punches of colour on items that can be easily replaced when the time comes for you to change the colour or neutralize the space. Keep the flooring, cabinets, and large pieces of furniture as simple as possible. Add your accent colour to selected walls with paint or wallpaper, funky hardware, lighting, artwork, books, and/or fabrics.

Perhaps your choice is obviously bold and the center of attention, or it could be the subtle texture or print that gives your room a composed and comfortable atmosphere.

The team at Jenny Martin Design took home 4 Care Awards at this years award ceremony at The Empress Hotel. Queenswood won 3 silvers for Best Renovation, Best Kitchen and Best Bathroom under 125sf. Arabella took home GOLD for Best Bathroom over 125sf.

Queenswood - Kitchen Reno Wins Silver Care Award

By removing the wall diving the kitchen and dining room we were able to create a open concept with lots of light. The kitchen cabinets were painted Benjamin Moore Cloud White which was carried onto the ceiling and trim throughout the house. The island was stained a deep espresso. The counter-tops were done in a quartz sand/tan tone mirroring the tone of the floor tile. Built in shelves were added in the dining Room to create a drybar. The fabric barrel shades add texture and elegance. Built in seating was also added in the breakfast nook which also doubles as extra storage.

Living Room (Before and After)

The dated living room was transformed from a dingy dated space to an inviting space for entertaining. The existing fireplace was removed and a new contemporary unit was relocated on the adjacent wall. Millwork units were added on either side of the fireplace to further enhance the focal point while creating symmetry and balance. Integral lighting was added within each of the shelves to highlight artwork and accessories by creating pools of light
and warmth.

The Great Hardwood Debate

This is our first entry in a long time; so where does one begin in this rapidly progressing world of design? Perhaps a good start is at the foundation of any well composed room…the floor.

There are many applications of flooring and we’ve come along way from the dirt and dung surfaces of early homes. Some of us have even moved passed the Middle Ages and no longer throw household waste on the floor to be trampled down. Luckily our world has evolved and the options for flooring are plentiful. Products like stone and porcelain tile, concrete, wood, cork, laminate, vinyl, and carpet are the key players today. Of course we’ll keep you updated with new products as the industry is ever changing, but for now let’s keep it simple and start with the ever looming question...

To hardwood or not to hardwood?

Pros
Hardwood flooring will stand the test of time. It is durable and with proper care and maintenance, vacuum and polish, this floor will serve you well. If you are ready for a décor change, it can be sanded and re-stained. Since hardwood is solid wood, it can be sanded without the worry of a thin veneer like engineered hardwood. Hardwood can be initially a cheaper product, with the exception of exotic woods, than its engineered counterparts. If you want to boost the appeal of your home for re-sale, hardwood can elevate the value and be a great selling feature.

Cons
The installation of hardwood can cost more than the engineered wood. It requires glue and nail-down application and is not available in the click & lock installation method. So, labour often becomes more expensive or equal to engineered flooring in the end. Also, most condos do not allow hardwood in the strata complex. It can be noisy for downstairs neighbours as it is applied directly to sub floor without a noise muffling under pad. Another issue is the island climate. Moisture and humidity doesn’t always play nice with hardwood. It has a tendency to flex and bow as we go through the seasons. Also, some species of hardwood can be quite soft. There are many species available, but the softer woods will show scratches and scuffs from pets, children, and everyday use. It can also fade and stain easier than other flooring types, so maintenance is certainly required to keep it looking beautiful.

Choosing the right flooring for your room is crucial and plays a major role in the overall look and feel of the space. It is an important surface in any area as it will ground the room and act as a base canvas for the rest of the materials to come. Like any product there are pros and cons. I do not want to convince you either way, but merely give you the facts and guide you to a final decision depending on your individual project.

I'm really happy with how this turned out, its bold and dramatic while still simple and coastal. We used a slab door with a quartered walnut veneer stained in a deep black walnut which balanced with the Carrara quartz countertop by Zodiac. We used sinks by Duravit to create symmetry which we emphasized with wall mounted faucets by blu. The chromatherapy or "colour therapy" bathtub adds to the spa experience.
